The Ministry of
Health and Long Term Care recognizes two purposes for the use of
restraining devices on residents of long-term care:
-
As Restraints,
for the protection of the resident and/or others in situations where
there is an imminent risk of harm to a resident or other person(s).
-
To support or
stabilize the resident so that his or her participation in
activities of daily living (eating, walking, recreation, etc.) and
quality of life are improved. These devices are referred to
PASDS (Personal Assistance Service Devices).
-
If it is
deemed appropriate to use a restraint based on risk, we must
document that all other alternatives have been tried without
success, informed consent has been obtained and appropriate
monitoring/documentation and re-evaluation is completed.
St. Patrick’s Home
has a policy of “Least Restraints” in keeping with the Ministry’s
requirements and our own philosophy of resident care. |
