Fire Safety
For the safety of all residents, no kettles, toasters, electric heaters,
humidifiers or electric blankets are permitted in the resident’s room.
Any questions regarding fire safety should be directed to the floor
supervisor or the Director of Environmental Services.
During a Fire Alarm
When the fire alarm sounds, residents are asked to remain where they
are, unless smoke or fire can be seen, or are requested to move by the
staff.
Telephones and elevators are not to be used during the fire alarm, and
each fire alarm should be treated as an authentic fire.
Emergency Drills
The Home is required by law to test our plans for responding to various
emergency situations, such as fires, disasters, missing residents, etc.
The fire plan has to be tested monthly on each shift; other plans are
tested annually. In the case of the fire and disaster plans, the fire
bells will ring which can, for some, be frightening; it is also
annoying, but it is all for the safety of the residents, to ensure that
staff have practiced what to do. Residents (and anyone in the Home at
the time) are asked to follow staff instructions. ALL ALARMS ARE TREATED
AS “REAL” - do not assume it is “just a drill”. |

Disasters
There are several situations that can lead to what the Home or the
City of Ottawa calls a “disaster”, including situations that are
city-wide, for example, an earthquake. Another situation could be a
fire that spreads throughout a unit and then extends to another
floor. These events are highly
unlikely to occur. However, staff must be prepared to act in the
event that they do occur.
We have formal plans in place for several situations, and we test
these plans annually. As a result of the tests, we learn as
individuals and as an organization, and when necessary, the plans
are updated.
Plan Approval
The Fire Safety and Disaster Plan has been approved by the Ottawa
Fire Department; when any changes are made, it is re-submitted for
approval.
