Leaves of Absence
|
 |
Residents are
encouraged to remain as active and independent as possible. Therefore,
shopping trips, visits with family and friends, weekend trips,
vacations, (up to two consecutive weeks per year) etc. are heartily
endorsed. The resident is requested to sign the book at their nursing
station, as well as to advise the receptionist, when leaving and upon
return.
|
|
The following
rules are based on Ministry of Health Standards. |
|
|
|
Vacation Leave
After admission, the
resident may take a vacation leave of twenty-one (21) days a year. The
vacation time for one year cannot be saved and added to the next year.
Casual Leave (see below) may be combined with vacation leave so that it
may be possible to have up to thirty-one (31) days of combined leave
once a year.
|
|
|
Casual Leave of
Absence
The resident may have
a casual leave of up to 48 hours per week.
For calculation of the period for casual leave, the first day of the
week is considered to be Sunday. |

Medical and
Psychiatric Leave of Absence
The period of leave
each time a resident needs to be hospitalized is:
• Twenty-one (21) days for medical care and
• Forty-five (45) days for psychiatric care.
This means that during this period of time, the resident will continue
to pay the usual costs for accommodation; the government will continue
to pay its portion.
A resident may have a medical or psychiatric care leave as often as care
is required in a hospital.
|
|
|
If the resident is in
hospital for 21 medical care days or 45 psychiatric care days, they may
still hold their room at St. Patrick’s Home for up to an additional 30
days if willing to pay the full rate of the room (also called
“bed-holding fee”). This would mean that the resident would pay for
these additional days:
• the usual room fee to St. Patrick’s Home, and
• the amount that the Ministry of Health would pay.
Residents who are unable to afford this cost may apply for assistance
from a special fund established for this purpose.
