Pharmacy Charges

Medication bottles The provincial government has a system of co-payment for drugs covered under the Ontario Drug Benefit Program. When living in a facility such as St. Patrick’s Home, the co-payment fee is $2 for each new or renewed prescription (if living in the community, the charge is over $6 per item). This co-payment is billed monthly.

If a resident has a Trust Account, the pharmacy bills are sent directly to the Business Office and are paid on behalf of the resident from their Trust Account. For residents without a Trust Account, the bill is sent directly to the resident or to the substitute decision maker for the resident.

It may be that the physician will order a medication that is not covered by the Ontario Drug Benefit Program. In that case, the resident must pay the full cost of the medication. The Business Office tries to work with the physician so that a covered medication is substituted for the non-covered item, if the resident has limited finances.
