Louise and Bruce BourbeauOTTAWA - Wednesday at City Hall the United way unveiled a plaque honouring the 36 recipients of the 2011 Community Builders Awards. The Ottawa Senators Club won the CBA of the year award and their photo rests at the top of the brand new plaque on the wall of Inspiration that hangs in Jean Pigott Place.

The United Way Community Builder awards are given away annually to people in Ottawa making a difference. Among the award winners in 2011 were Louise and Bruce Bourbeau who have been volunteering for more than 15 years with St. Patrick's Home, a long-term care facility.

They found out about the award at their 50th wedding anniversary last October among family and friends. Louise said it was a great surprise and a chance to celebrate with family and friends.

"I'm honoured, really, and humbled to be one of 36 volunteers who work in the community for the benefit of the people, it's mind-boggling," she said.

Her husband Bruce says he'll keep volunteering as long as he's health.

"We have a responsibility to give back," he told 1310News.

Their names join the more than 700 already adorning the Wall of Inspiration and Mayor Jim Watson, an award winner back at the time of amalgamation, said there are thousands of volunteers who deserve to be recognized.

Honestly, shouldn’t we call it St. Patrick’s Month? Among the non-stop activities organized in and around St. Paddy’s Day in Ottawa was an inaugural luncheon held Friday at the Lago restaurant at Dow’s Lake Pavilion.

Roughly 275 people attended the networking event, which featured live Irish music with drinks and food, including cheeses imported from the Emerald Isle.

The luncheon was organized by Patrick Whelan, executive V-P and COO of Osgoode Properties; Bob Kerr of OFL Business Interiors; investment adviser David Guilfoyle; Patrick Dion, a partner at Greenbridge Consulting; Patrick Murray, a partner at McMillan LLP, and his brother, Brian Murray, of Sakto Corp.

They were hoping to net $40,000 to $45,000 for the Ireland Fund of Canada, St. Patrick’s Home of Ottawa and St. Brigid’s Centre.

St. Patrick’s Parade grand marshal Bill Brown of Mont Cascades Golf Club was seen yakking with past grand marshal Larry Bradley of the Heart & Crown, while St. Pat’s Home Foundation’s Jennifer Conley rubbed elbows with Mariette MacIsaac from Trinity Development (it donated $1 million toward St. Pat’s campaign to build a new long-term care facility).

Senator Mike Duffy filled in as the guest speaker for Defence Minister Peter MacKay, who was said to be ill with walking pneumonia. Duffy’s family immigrated from County Monaghan to P.E.I. in the 1830s.

The luck of the Irish was with lawyer Jamison Young, who won a trip for two to Ireland. His B&B package and car rental comes with Aeroplan points donated by Osgoode Properties president Stephen Greenberg.

Ten-year old twins plan Valentine’s Day cheer for seniors

Article from Your Ottawa
Ten-year old twins plan Valentine’s Day cheer for seniors. Ten-year old twins Mindy and Chloe Baroody have championed a campaign to raise money to buy 202 roses for seniors at St. Patrick's Home. Eddie Rwema

Valentine’s Day can be a lonely holiday for the elderly, most of whom may have lost a spouse, but not at St. Patrick’s Home this year.

Students at George Etienne Cartier French Catholic elementary school are determined to help spread love by buying roses and making cards for seniors on long term care at St. Patrick’s Home in Ottawa South.

Thanks to efforts by 10-year old twins Chloe and Mindy Baroody, every senior at the home will receive a rose and a Valentine card.

The twins and their class of 28 will make a 14-minute walk to St Pat’s on Feb. 14 to join residents in celebrating Valentine’s Day.

“We are doing it for the elderly people at St. Patrick’s who might feel a bit lonely and forgotten,” said Chloe.

Chloe and her sister Mindy have spent the last two weeks fundraising and making cards to ensure seniors don’t feel forgotten on Valentine’s.

“We decided to make them feel better and loved by giving them one rose each and one hand made card,” said Chloe.

They were able to raise $150 which they said is enough to buy 202 roses, enough for all the residents at St. Pat’s.

“It is a good cause and I hope the elderly people will like it,” said Mindy.

The students are making the cards in the shape of a heart with drawings and decorations.

“We want to make the elderly people happy to see kids and to receive gifts from them,” said Chloe.

On the other hand, Mindy who wants to be a doctor when she grows up so she can help others, said she was excited about the cause and hopes the seniors will be happy too.

“We are trying to send out a message to other kids that helping is fun – you can always help in a good way,” said Mindy.

“I would say that it is not only that you are a kid or young that you can’t do things to help others. Anyone could make a difference.”

St. Pat’s provides long term care to adults who are affected by physical losses and require 24-hour care.

While young people their age would be thinking of chocolates on Valentine’s Day, these 10-year old are already thinking of love – and how to help change other people’s lives.

Their mother Sylva said thinks seeing children that age so excited about helping other is heart warming.

“It makes me proud that they are becoming compassionate citizens and that they thought of the elderly,” said Sylva.

She said the kids have been very involved since their childhood.

“It is very encouraging seeing them thinking of the most vulnerable members of our society,” she said.

As twins, Sylva said they think alike most of the time.

“I find that they have an interest in other human beings.”

School principal France Girard said it was thoughtful of the girls to think of such a cause and that the school has been supportive.

“We are a Catholic school; we encourage kids to do good deeds in the community,” said Girard.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Construction of the new St. Patrick’s Home begins

Ottawa, ON >>> September 20, 2011, Construction of the long-awaited new St. Patrick’s Home of Ottawa will officially begin the week of September 26, 2011.

St. Patrick’s Home is an important part of Ottawa’s history having been founded pre-Confederation by the Grey Sisters in 1865. Since then, it has supported generations of seniors and others in need of care.

In October of 2010, St. Patrick’s Home officially announced plans to build a brand new, Class A, 288 bed Long Term Care Home. The new, modern facility will be located adjacent to the current building at 2865 Riverside Drive in South Ottawa.
The Ministry of Health and Long Term Care will provide baseline funding for the new Home. However, the successful Capital Campaign which raised 10 million dollars will ensure that the vision for a building that far exceeds Ministry requirements will be realized.
“Our dream of a new St. Pat’s has become a reality because of the generosity of donors, volunteers and friends of the Home” states Campaign Chairman Larry Kelly, “our local community has rallied around our beloved Long Term Care Home to truly demonstrate how much they respect and admire St. Pat’s.”
Chairman Larry Kelly is thrilled the Campaign will have a profoundly positive impact on eldercare in Ottawa, “The demand for long-term care beds in our city continues to make front page news.  With the addition of 86 new beds in the new Home, the new St. Pat’s will assist with the systemic crisis felt in our hospitals, and will assist in ensuring members of our broader community will be able to access the health care most appropriate to their needs”.

A small but very dedicated core team of community leaders has worked in concert with talented staff to make the new St. Patrick’s Home a reality.

Residents are expected to move in the Fall of 2013. The Campaign will continue its ambitious fundraising goals in supporting the construction of the new Home.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

ST. PATRICK'S DAY AT ST. PATRICK’S HOME
CELEBRATED WITH TEN MILLION DOLLARS

Ottawa, ON >>> March 17, 2011, The Campaign to build a new St. Patrick’s Home has reached a very significant milestone on St. Patrick’s Day. To date, ten million dollars has been raised.
“Our dream of a new St. Pat’s is on pace to become a reality because of the generosity of donors and friends of the Home” states Campaign Chairman Larry Kelly, “our local community has rallied around our beloved Long Term Care Home to truly demonstrate how much they respect and admire St. Pat’s.”

However, the Campaign will ensure that the vision for a building that far exceeds Ministry requirements will be realized.
Chairman Larry Kelly is thrilled the Campaign will positively impact eldercare in Ottawa, “The demand for long-term care beds for our vulnerable seniors is acute and is affecting the quality of care our seniors receive in the last years of their lives.  Our aging facility does not comfortably accommodate the very complex care needs of today and tomorrow’s residents.  Our expanded long term care Home will assist with the systemic crisis felt in our hospitals, and will assist in ensuring members of our broader community will be able to access the health care most appropriate to their needs”.

Over the past year, a small but very dedicated core team of community leaders has been serving on the Campaign Cabinet with Chairman Larry Kelly.  These Champions and Ambassadors of the Home, including Pat Kelly, Paul McCarney, Elizabeth Cosgrove, Brian Murray, Don Burke and Jan Kaminski Jr, have been charged with bringing the St. Pat’s spirit out into the community to inspire investment in the project. Additional volunteers included Thom Bennett, Dave Guilfoyle, Charlie Logue, Peter Vice and Jim Chadwick.

“Larry and the Cabinet have been so hard working and tireless in this Campaign.  It is  inspiring to see such dedicated volunteers who are passionate about eldercare in our community, enthuses Jennifer Conley the Campaign Director and Foundation’s Executive Director, “the Residents, Staff, Volunteers, Sisters and Board members are awe-struck and profoundly grateful by the Campaign’s achievement so far.”

The Capital Campaign for the new St. Patrick’s Home will create features and amenities that would not be possible through baseline funding. Campaign Chairman Larry Kelly states “The Campaign will ensure that St. Pat’s will continue its legacy as being an extraordinary place for our community’s elderly”.

Although this monumental milestone has been achieved, fundraising will continue to be critical for the creation of the new Home.  “The success of the Campaign to date is just the beginning to building a new dream for St. Pats” states Jennifer Conley “We have achieved a very significant milestone, but we must now continue to call up on our friends and donors to be partners and investors in our evolving project to ensure the new Home is built.  We will continue asking our community to generously donate so we can build on our legacy at St. Pat’s”.
Construction of the new Home is to commence in the late Spring of 2011 with Residents expected to move in the Fall of 2013. The Campaign will continue its ambitious fundraising goals in supporting the construction of the new Home.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

ST. PATRICK'S HOME OF OTTAWA RECEIVES
ONE MILLION DOLLAR DONATION
,

LARGEST IN ITS HISTORY.

Ottawa, ON >>> February 9, 2011, The Campaign to build a new St. Patrick’s Home has received some exciting news, and a one million dollar donation. The extraordinary gift from John and Jennifer Ruddy is the largest donation ever made in the 146 year history of St. Patrick's Home, a well known Ottawa Long Term Care Home.

“I am joined by the entire St. Pat’s family in thanking John and Jennifer Ruddy for this critically-needed donation. Our dream of a new St. Pat’s will become a reality, in part, through this exceptional Gift” states Larry Kelly, the Chairman of the ten million dollar Campaign for the new St. Patrick’s Home.

St. Patrick’s Home is an important part of Ottawa’s history having been founded pre-Confederation by the Grey Sisters in 1865. Since then, it has supported generations of seniors and others in need of care.

“We are sincerely and profoundly grateful that the Ruddy family has chosen to assist with the eldercare crisis in our community by investing in our new Home. This remarkable Gift brings the Campaign total to $9.5 million. We are very well positioned to succeed in reaching our target of $10 million, thanks to John's and Jennifer's generosity.”

In October of 2010, St. Pat’s officially announced plans to build a brand new, Class A, 288 bed Long Term Care Home. The new, modern facility will be located adjacent to the current building at 2865 Riverside Drive in South Ottawa. Moreover, the Home will create an inclusive and accessible place for our community’s elderly for generations to come.

The $10 million dollar Capital Campaign for the new St. Patrick’s Home will create features and amenities that would not be possible through baseline funding. Campaign Chairman Larry Kelly states “The Campaign will ensure that St. Pat’s will continue to be an extraordinary place for our community’s elderly. The Home has a solid and longstanding reputation for providing exceptional care, but it is critical and urgent that we build a new Home to better meet the needs of our seniors. Eldercare is one of our community’s top healthcare issues and we must come together to invest in this crisis. We are grateful to have community champions such as John and Jennifer Ruddy to partner with us in our ambitious and much needed Campaign”.

The Ministry of Health and Long Term Care will provide baseline funding for the $55.4 million dollar facility. But community investment will be critical in order to realize a vision for a building that exceeds Ministry requirements in many key areas.

Construction of the new Home is to commence in the late Spring of 2011 as planning is well underway. Residents are expected to move in the Fall of 2013.

CRITICALLY NEEDED NEW LONG TERM CARE HOME TO BE BUILT
St. Patrick’s Home of Ottawa – Since 1865

Ottawa, ON >>> On October 5, 2010, St. Patrick’s Home of Ottawa formally announced plans to build a brand new, Class A, 288 bed Long Term Care Home.  The new Home will be located adjacent to the current Home at 2865 Riverside Drive in South Ottawa.

Board of Directors Chair, Don Burke states “St. Patrick’s Home is an important part of Ottawa’s history having been founded pre-Confederation by the Grey Sisters in 1865. It has supported generations of seniors and others in need of care over the past 145 years. The new St. Pat’s will create an inclusive and accessible facility for our community’s elderly for generations to come.”

Planning for the new Home is well underway.  Construction is proposed to commence in the Spring of 2011, with Residents expected to move in Fall 2013.

"This is a great day for residents and their families." said Linda Chaplin, President and Chief Executive Officer at St. Patrick’s "It speaks to hard-earned consumer confidence in our care and services. We are looking forward to continuing our strong reputation for quality care in the community within a brand new, Class A Home that can better respond to the complex care needs of seniors.”

The Ministry of Health and Long Term Care will provide baseline funding for the $55.4 million dollar Home. However, in order to support the ambitious vision for a Home that exceeds Ministry requirements in many key areas, community investment will be critical.

Therefore, in conjunction with the announcement of plans to build the new St. Patrick’s, was the announcement of a $10 million dollar Capital Campaign “Building on Legacy” to create features and amenities for the new Home that would not be possible through baseline funding.  Campaign Chairman Larry Kelly states “Building on Legacy will ensure that St. Pat’s will continue to be an extraordinary place for our community’s elderly. The Home has a strong reputation for providing exceptional care, but it is critical and urgent that we build a new Home to better meet the needs of our seniors.  Eldercare is one of our community’s #1 healthcare issues and we must come together to invest in this crisis.
