First Few Days After Admission

The day of admission can be a very busy and tiring day.
The new resident and family members are greeted by the Social Worker who
takes them to their unit. The resident will meet many people on that first
day, most especially the nursing and nutritional services staff. These
people need to know right away what the resident's specific health and
dietary concerns are. The nurse will want to take the resident's blood
pressure and temperature, and will ask about any medications which the
resident is currently taking. The staff who work on the resident's unit
will be introduced to the resident and the routine of the unit will be
explained. As much as possible, staff try to accommodate the preferences
of residents, for example, bath days and time. |

If arriving before lunch, the Social Worker will escort
the resident and family to the dining room where the resident will be
eating. |

Over the course of
the next few hours, the resident and family will have a
chance to unpack and get a bit settled. Someone from the
Housekeeping & Laundry Department will introduce themselves, and
will explain the procedure about room cleaning and
laundry. Resident clothing will be removed for
marking. As well, all electrical appliances, lamps,
etc. brought in will be inspected for
safety by an
Environmental Services staff. |

During the next few days, other staff will
be introducing themselves to the resident, and family if
present, and will be offering their help, in their
respective areas. For example, someone from pastoral
services will visit, to see if the resident wishes to
attend religious services and if assistance is required.

Upon admission to the Home the resident will be required to sign a Resident Admission Contract which describes
the rights and responsibilities of residents of St. Patrick's Home. A copy of the contract may be returned to the resident. An appointment may be made with the
Business Office to complete this task. |
